TRAGOPOGON PRATENSIS
A large double handful of the entire plant,
roots, flowers, and all bruised and boiled, and then strained, with
a little sweet oil, is an excellent elyster in the most desperate
cases of strangury or suppression of urine,from whatever cause.
This is also known as Noon Flower and Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon,
because the large and beautiful yellow flowers close at midday. They
grow on firm stalks a foot (30 cm) high, with flat, bluish-green leaves.
Where to find it: Meadows and roadside verges.
Flowering time: Midsummer.
Astrology: Under the dominion of Jupiter.
Medicinal virtues: A decoction of the roots is good for heart-burn,
loss of appetite, and liver and chest disorders. It expels sand and
gravel, slime and small stones.
The roots cooked like Parsnips, with butter, are good for cold, watery
stomachs. They strengthen the lean and the consumptive and the weak
after a long illness. The distilled water gives relief to inward imposthumes,
pleurisy, stitches or pains in the sides.
Modern uses: The Deputation of Goat's Beard as a medicinal
plant has not survived although it is commonly available. Meadowsweet
is more popular for dyspepsia; Dandelion, which is of the same family
as Goat's Beard, is one of the best liver tonics; while for chest
disorders there are many good remedies, such as Colt's Foot and Horehound.
The fresh juice of Goat's Beard was considered to be better than any
antacid in relieving dyspepsia. |
