fluxweed.jpg (11289 bytes) FLIXWEED or FLUXWEED
DESCURAINIA ( = SISYMBRIUM) SOPHIA
It is called Fluxweed because it cures the flux. It has a white woody root, long, winged and finely divided leaves, small yellow flowers which bear a reddish seed; and it grows to about two feet (60 cm).
Where to find it. Sandy ground and waste places.
Flowering time: Early summer.
Astrology. The herb is saturnine.
Medicinal virtues: Both herb and seed are excellent to stay the flux and lax of the belly and are no less effectual than Plantain and Comfrey. It is also used to consolidate bones that are broken or out of joint. A decoction of the herb kills worms in the stomach. A salve made from the herb quickly heals all old sores, however foul and malignant they may be. Paracelsus extols it to the skies. It is fitting that the syrup, ointrnent and plasters of it, were kept in all houses.
Modern uses: The juice mixed inequal parts with honey was used a teaspoonful at a time for chronic coughs or ulcerated throat. A strong infusion of the dried herb relieves asthma. Use one teaspoonful to one cup of boiling water and allow to infuse for 30 minutes, then sip. The plant is related to Hedge Mustard (Sisymbrium officinale), which is dealt with on another page. See Mustard.
Flixweed is not generally available from herbalists at the present time.
