FLEABANE (Canadian)
CONYZA CANADENSIS (= ERIGERON CANADENSE)
An excellent pectoral; but being unpleasant
is not often used.
An annual with a dusky green stalk tinged with brown, broad lower
leaves, narrow upper leaves, and white flowers, with a yellow disc.
Also called Simson.
Where to find it: Dry banks and waste ground. In the United
States it is a stubborn weed, seeding itself in mint fields.
Flowering time: Summer. Astrology: It is under
Venus.
Medicinal virtues: The juice makes an excellent pectoral tonic,
although unpleasant to take. The decoction, or infusion, may he sweetened
and used with success in consumptive cases.
Modern uses: The whole herb or seeds are used, the plant being
gathered when in flower and dried. The leaves contain an essential
oil. An infusion of the herb, prepared in the usual way and given
in doses of 2 fl oz
(56 ml), has an astringing diuretic action. It is therefore useful
in checking simple diarrhoea, and in treating kidney disease, particularly
urinary stones. The oil is haemostatic and will stop bleeding from
the lungs or colon. A few drops are given on a lump of sugar. |
