FENNEL FLOWER
NIGELLA SATIVA
It helps the tertian and quartan agues.
An annual plant, known commonly nowadays as Love in a Mist.
It is not related to Fennel. The flowers are blue.
Where to find it: It is grown in gardens, but originated
in Syria.
Flowering time: Early to midsummer.
Astrology: This is also under Mercury.
Medicinal virtues: Only the seed is used. It is accounted
heating and drying and said to provoke the urine. But it is seldom
used.
Modern uses: The seeds are diuretic, carminative and anti-parasitical,
but are more in use as a spice than a herbal medicine. They are
used as a pepper and for seasoning curries. Homoeopaths make a tincture
from the seed for digestive and bowel complaints.
